Privacy Policy
What this covers
This privacy policy explains what personal data Rathbone Labs LLC, the maker of Escribo (“Escribo”, “we”, “us”), collects through the escriboapp.com website and the Escribo desktop application, how we use it, and the rights you have over it. Use of the desktop application itself is covered by the End User License Agreement.
Data controller
Rathbone Labs LLC is the data controller for any personal data described here. You can reach us through the issue tracker at github.com/rathboma/escribo-app.
The desktop application
The Escribo application runs entirely on your computer and makes no network connections of any kind. There is no account to sign in to, no analytics, no crash reporting, no check for updates, and no license validation over the network: a license key is verified on the device it was issued for, without contacting us. Your screenshots, annotations, brand profiles and settings are stored on your computer only, and leave it only when you copy, save, export or share them yourself. Because of this, we hold no data at all about how you use the application.
Device codes. To buy a Pro or Business license, you copy the device code the application shows you into the checkout. The code identifies one computer for licensing purposes, contains no personal information, and is only ever sent to us by you.
The website
escriboapp.com is a static website. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics, and loads nothing from third-party domains; even the fonts are served from our own site. Two things on it involve anyone else, and only when you ask for them:
- Downloads. The download page asks GitHub for the latest release of Escribo and starts the download from there, so GitHub sees that request under GitHub's privacy statement.
- Server logs. The provider that hosts escriboapp.com may keep standard server logs, such as IP addresses, user agents and the pages requested, in order to operate and secure the site. We do not use them for anything else.
Data you give us
Email for release notes. If you enter your email address on the download page, we use it to send you the download link and the occasional release note. Every message has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes you from the list.
Purchases. When you buy a license, we receive your name, your email address, the device code or codes you bought licenses for, and a record of the payment from our payment processor, which handles your card details itself; we never see your full card number. We use this to issue your license key, send it to you, and keep the records that tax and accounting law require.
Support. If you contact us, or open an issue on GitHub, we keep the correspondence so that we can help you. Issues on GitHub are public and are governed by GitHub's terms.
How we use it
Only to deliver what you asked for: a download link, a license key, an answer to your question, and release notes if you signed up for them, plus the purchase records we are required to keep. We never sell personal data, share it with advertisers, or use it to profile you.
Who can see it
Access is limited to the people who run Escribo, and to the service providers that deliver email, process payments and host the website on our behalf, each only to the extent their service requires. We do not give personal data to anyone else unless the law requires it, for example in response to a lawful request from a public authority or to establish or defend a legal claim.
Security
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the personal data we hold against unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration or loss. It is processed on our service providers' infrastructure, under their own security programmes, and on equipment we control.
Retention
We keep your email address on the release-notes list until you unsubscribe, purchase records for as long as tax and accounting law requires, and support correspondence for as long as it takes to help you. You can ask us to delete anything the law does not oblige us to keep.
Your rights
You have the right, at any time, to know whether we hold personal data about you, to see it, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to our use of it, and to receive a copy in a portable format. Send requests through the contact details above. If you are in the European Union or the United Kingdom, these are your rights under the GDPR, and you may also complain to your local data protection authority.
Data breach notifications
Should we detect a data breach affecting your personal data, we will notify you within 72 hours of detecting it.
Children
Escribo is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may change this policy from time to time, and will post the new version on this page with a new date at the top. If a change matters, we will also mention it in the release notes for anyone on the list. Unless stated otherwise, the then-current policy applies to all personal data we hold.
Definitions
- “Personal data” means any information relating to an identified or identifiable person.
- “Device code” means the identifier the Escribo application derives from a computer and shows in its preferences, against which a license key is issued.
- “Data controller” means the party that decides why and how personal data is processed. For everything in this policy, that is Rathbone Labs LLC.
Legal information
This policy relates solely to escriboapp.com and the Escribo desktop application.
